Fundamentally, I am a computer geek, but there are many types of geek, even within the sub-type computer geek. I prefer my computing experience unix-flavored, specifically Debian GNU/Linux. I have documented my command-line-heavy preferences in My Good Easy. I like my OS and my tools a lot, but I always try to keep in mind that they are tools not cults (well, maybe emacs is a cult). I am not really a fan of rampant fanboyism, especially in computers. I am a strong believer in the value of Free Software and free culture, but I am not out to convert everyone, or destroy proprietary solutions.
Outside of computers and the net, I entertain myself with books. I read Fantasy, Sci-Fi and non-fiction for fun. I tend to read books over and over. Sometimes I finish a book and immediately start re-reading it. My current record for number of re-reads is somewhere above 20. I also believe that all else being equal, longer is better. A 3 to 4 hundred page book is almost too short. 600-800 is more like it, and if it is a series of 6 to 8 hundred page books (see: Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time), so much the better.
Besides fiction, I like technical books, science books and various other nonfiction, as long as it is good. I find almost all plain fiction annoying. It has the disadvantage of not being true, and instead of using the lack of truth as an opportunity to embellish it with aliens or Elves, they stick to boring real-world stuff.
I listen to a lot of music. My tastes center around classic rock, but range out quite a ways. I like geek music, from NerdCore Hip Hop, to video game and anime music, to any music that has more depth or unexpected references. One of my favorite bands, Steely Dan, makes pretty good geek music because of this (in my opinion). Squonks tears, Muswellbrook, and other references make for all kinds of fun. And of course, Donald Fagen did a whole album of Sci-Fi (Kamakiriad (mixing Japanese and Greek right in the tile!)).
I am also starting to get into jazz (influence from Steely Dan and Cowboy Bebob). I enjoy, but don't go out of my way to listen to, underground Hip Hop. It is much more interesting and positive than mainstream rap, although I don't really seem to get in the groove with it.
I am a green, occasionally Green, liberal atheist secular humanist rationalist xenophile omputer geek.
My Geekcode is:
-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----
Version: 3.12
GCS/S d- s: a-- C++++>$ UBL+++>$ P+ L+++>++++$ E(-) W++(+++)>$ N+ o K w+(---)>++ O-->+ M->++
V->+++ PS++ PE- Y+ PGP+ t+ 5+++ X+ R tv(+) b+++(++++) DI+ D+ G+ e>++ h!-(--) !r !y
------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------
If you haven't got the code memorized, you can copy and paste it here and have it decoded.
Someone ought to make an xml microformat version of the geek code. I mean this style is fine for .sigs, but for a modern web site, it is not nearly "web 2.0" enough. Also, it needs updating. XFiles? Dilbert? DOOM?? Who cares about those any more?
